April’s fool… 83 degrees… soooo tempting to pull out the summer season crops and get those going. Even though its over 80 here for a few days, it will frost a couple more times this month. Be patient. Let the ground warm up and and save yourself time and trouble by waiting a few weeks more. Walk around your flower beds and take stock of how eveything is doing. I noticed we have a few perenials that will need replacing and also see that the roses look outstanding. Although to rose garden dos need some cleaning up. I blame the chickens for that….
April has started with some pretty consistent rain. (April showers….) Been way to wet to sew anything additional out so most tasks have been dedicated to infrastructure. Cleaning out beds and pruning off what winter left behind. Really need to put out a tray of broccoli and cauliflower and the second succession of salad greens needs to get going as well.

Progress on the new large garden is plodding along
Fencing is about 50% complete and the bean and squash supports are up. It is best to have trellising and supports in before you plant. That includes tomato stakes. Everything ends up prettier with a plan. If you're wondering about the blue ribbon woven through fence, it's so the deer don't run through it. Blue is a color they can see easily and should help deter them from running full bore through it. At least that is the plan.

Update on what's already out.
The romain is doing well. It has been in the kitchen garden for about 2 weeks now. The peas we sewed last week have not popped up yet. With all the rain this week, they should be showing later this week. 6 cabbages not shown are also getting settled in.

Winter's display fading
Winter does have its own very pretty shows. The grasses will absolutely glow in the evening light and are memorizing swaying with the wind. Always a bittersweet day when you cut them back. Grasses seem to be an odd choice in landscaping but really do add a ton of interest to your beds. Especially in winter when all the queens of summer are sleeping.
